Things to do, places to go in the Loomis Basin
One lane of Brace Road near Sierra College Boulevard is scheduled to be closed for a portion of the day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday, Dec. 3, for utility work, depending on weather conditions. Drivers can expect delays. Ewing Irrigation Products is accepting donations for the Ewing Cares Food Drive, to benefit the Placer County Food Bank. Drop off food donations from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, at 3265 Swetzer Road. Donations will be accepted through Dec. 31. Food and refreshments will also be available. “Starry Night” at High Hand, 3750 Taylor Road, is a celebration of lights, beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3. Stroll through the glistening grounds, enjoy live music, and take advantage of shopping discounts with donations to the Loomis Basin Christmas Basket toy drive, Never Cry Wolf, Gold Country Wildlife, or SPCA. The 36th Annual Days of Yesteryear Country Christmas Faire, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, takes place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 3, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at Loomis Veterans Memorial Hall. In addition to a variety of arts and crafts, homemade desserts will be available. A lasagna luncheon, at $5 per person, will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Free lacrosse clinics, for boys in grades five through 12, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturdays, Dec. 11 and Jan. 15, at the LDS Recreation Park, 3211 Boulder Creek Place, in Penryn, at the I-80 exit. There will be skills demonstrations for new players and pre-season conditioning for returning players, followed by a fun, non-contact scrimmage. Wear cleats and take a stick; loaner sticks are available. The regular season begins in February; registration is now being accepted. There will be Christmas caroling, entertainment, refreshment, the lighting of the town Christmas tree, and Santa Claus will make a visit. Enjoy a Christmas Breakfast in the Country from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Loomis Congregational United Church of Christ, located at 6440 King Road. A complete breakfast of ham or turkey sausage, eggs, pancakes, coffee, tea, fruit and juice will be served, and there will also be a bake sale, a raffle and silent auction. Golden Eagle Baseball 2011 will hold walk-in registration from 6 to 8 p.m. at Loomis Pizza Factory on Thursday, Dec. 9. Youngsters ages 5 to 14 are eligible to participate. Visit five homes during the Loomis Basin Holiday Home Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11. Tickets are $25 in advance, or $30 the day of the event. The self-guided tour is sponsored by the Loomis Basin Education Foundation to benefit students of the Loomis Basin Union School District. In Loomis, tickets are available at the Flower Farm, High Hand Nhursery and Blue Goose Produce. Sierra Foothills Rugby Club will hold free clinics at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at the LDS Park in Penryn. The club is expanding with 6 divisions that will cover a wide range of kids from the entire foothills area. Practice starts in December and tournaments run January to May. A concert series will be presented by the First United Methodist Church of Loomis, located at 6414 Brace Road. “Night of Father’s Love,” a Christmas cantata, will feature the church choir at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19. Coming up next year are “Jazz, Jazz, and More Jazz!,” “Show Tunes” by Capital Pops, a show by the Sacramento Men’s Gay Chorus, and an opera original composition by David Rudat. The series 5-pack is $50 per person, or $45 each for 2 or more people. Single tickets are $15 each, and children 12 and under admitted free of charge. Dispose of old computers, printers, televisions and other electronic equipment for free at Loomis Self Storage, 5950 Jetton Lane (off Swetzer). The free service is in conjunction with Greenspot Dropoff, which will recycle the e-waste. Loomis Self Storage is open for recycling from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
