Oakmont's Kyle Coates came up short in his semifinal match at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II tennis championships Friday, losing out on the chance to face SFL rival Brett Bacharach one more time. The Viking junior, seeded third in the event, battled back and forth with Tanner Schmutte of Oak Ridge, but it was Schmutte that was able to deliver the big shots when he needed them. The Sierra Valley Conference singles champion ousted the Sierra Foothill League winner in straight sets, 7-5 and 7-6. Bacharach was the No. 4 seed at the tourney, held Thursday and Friday at Johnson Ranch, but this year's SFL runner-up toppled top-seeded Teddy Chung of Benicia 7-6, 6-4 in his semifinal match to set up his duel with No. 2 Schmutte. The Oak Ridge southpaw took game one 6-4, but Bacharach came roaring back to take game two 6-1 before closing Schmutte out 7-5 in the decisive third stanza.
