Cardinal Newman drubs Golden Eagles
By: Eric Gourley Gold Country News Service
It will be back to the drawing board this week for the Del Oro High football team after suffering a tough season home opener loss last week at the hands of a strong opponent. The Golden Eagles scored on their first possession of the game to take a 6-0 lead but then had no answer for a talented Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa squad as the visitors from Sonoma County roared back to take a 52-25 win over the Golden Eagles. Now 0-2 on the season, the Golden Eagles will try to rebound this Friday night when they host Enochs of Modesto with kickoff at Eagle Stadium set for 7:30 p.m. “We just got down on ourselves once they got rolling,” said Eagles quarterback Mason Magleby said. “We just have to get back to the drawing board. It starts with the mental.” Del Oro looked strong on its opening drive, marching 64 yards on six plays to take an early 6-0 advantage on Bryce Pratt’s 8-yard touchdown run, but the Cardinals (2-0) scored on their next five possessions to lead 31-6. Cardinal Newman stretched the lead to as much as 52-12 late in the third quarter. Del Oro had a tough time with Newman’s Jeff Badger, a senior running back who had six carries for a game-high 143 yards and two touchdowns. Cardinal Newman quarterback Randy Wright completed 8-of-13 passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns. He took a knee on every Cardinals play for the final 7:18, preventing Del Oro’s reserves from seeing any action on defense. Magleby completed 12-of-25 passes for 163 yards but was picked off by the visitors three times. Del Oro punted once, missed a 23-yard field goal and turned the ball over on fourth down three times. Bryce Pratt carried 27 times for 136 yards and three touchdowns, adding dives of 1 yard in the third and fourth quarters. Wade Westlake also scored on a 1-yard dive in the fourth quarter. Del Oro 30 Cardinal Newman 6 – Cody O’Sullivan ran for a pair of touchdowns as Del Oro’s JVs improved to 2-0 with the win over Newman. Tyler Adair added another score for the winners while Brandon Acuna returned an interception for a touchdown. Max Magleby also kicked a 32-yard field goal for the Eagles. Del Oro Frosh 40 Antelope 0 – Ron Warner scored on a touchdown reception and recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for another score and Nick O’Sullivan added another score on a 70-yard jaunt as the Golden Eagles blanked the Titans last Thursday night. Hard running by Warner, Kyle Anderson, Russell Smith and Jake Johnson provided the Del Oro gridders with a potent running game. Quarterback Bobby Heatherington was also effective as he tossed touchdown passes to Warner and Blake Covey. Anderson also booted a 35-yard field goal for the Golden Eagles who led 26-0 at halftime. Del Oro will host Enochs of Modesto today at 5:30 p.m.
