An 83-year-old man and his passenger were taken to the hospital Thursday morning after the car he was driving rolled over and blocked part of the freeway. The accident occurred a little after 8:30 a.m. when John Wilkerson of Rough and Ready reportedly tried to move from the No. 3 lane to the No. 2 lane on westbound Interstate 80 just west of Ophir Road. He reportedly swerved to miss a car in the lane, overcorrected, hit the right shoulder and overturned, according to Officer David Martinez, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol. Martinez said the steep embankment Wilkerson’s car hit is “almost like hitting a wall.” Wilkerson’s speed was unknown but Martinez indicated officers believe he was traveling at freeway speeds. His 1996 green Saturn came to a rest on its roof in the No. 2 lane. Both Wilkerson and his female passenger were taken via ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center for treatment of minor to moderate injuries, Martinez said. The No. 2 and No. 3 lanes were closed for about an hour as crews cleaned up the scene. All lanes were reopened just before 9:30 a.m. No other vehicles were involved, Martinez said. ~ Jenifer Gee
