Things to do, see and hear in Loomis and Penryn
FRIDAY, OCT. 9 An Oktoberfest, to benefit PEACE for Families, is set for 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at the Blue Goose Fruit Shed. Enjoy the West Coast’s finest microbrews, hors d’oeuvres from local restaurants, live music and raffle prizes. Tickets are $30 each or 4 for $100 (a $20 designated-driver ticket is also available). A free Clothes Swap will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at Loomis Grammar School, at the corner of King and Taylor Roads. Donations of clothes are not required in order to participate. Donate toys to the Loomis Basin Christmas Basket Program by filling the Mr. Pickles truck, parked under the scoreboard, during the next three Del Oro High School home football games. The toys will go to the 600 children needing toys this Christmas. Del Oro High School Football is celebrating its 50th anniversary by honoring football players of the past. At each home game this year, the school will honor a decade of players, and there will be a hospitality tent in the north end zone for all honorees. On Oct. 9, players from the 1980s will be honored; Oct. 16, the 1970s; and Oct. 23, at the homecoming game, the 1960s. SATURDAY, OCT. 10 Friends of the Penryn Library will hold a book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, in front of the Penryn Library, during the Penryn Firefighters’ Oktoberfest. Cow Chip Bingo fun runs from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Loomis Community Park Pavilion. Cow Chip Bingo tickets are $10 each; the cows come out at 5 p.m. Dinner will be served from 6 to 7 p.m. and tickets are $14 for adults, and $6 for children 10 and under. Cow Chip Bingo watching is free. Dancing is also free and follows dinner. COMING UP The Senior L.I.F.E. Center and Placer School for Adults will offer a workshop lead by Dr. John Zielske, at 6414 Brace Road, at the First United Methodist Church of Loomis from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13. The topic will be “Leaving a Legacy.” The fee is $10; lunch is optional at $3. For more information, call 660-0543. Crafty Treasures presents a Fall Faire from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15; 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16; and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Blue Goose Fruit Shed. Admission is free. Troop 12 host its annual Spaghetti Dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at Loomis Grange Hall, 6486 Colwell Road in Penryn. Tickets will be available beginning Oct. 15 at Blue Goose Produce, the Pizza Factory and from Boy Scouts from Troop 12. Admission is $10 for adults or $5 for kids under the age of 10. Proceeds support Troop 12 activities. The Loomis Art Loop fall open studios tour takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 17 and 18. Take the free, self-guided tour and see the work of Loomis area professional artists Brenda Dominguez, Millie Beatie, Cindy Bonito, Paula Amerine, Sandy Delehanty, Victoria Brooks, Susan Goodmundson and Doug Horton. Pick up a free map at area businesses. The Town of Loomis Annual Fall Clean-up Day is Saturday, Oct. 31. Residents living within the town’s limits (identification required) can take their refuse and electronic devices to Del Oro High School’s upper parking lot (by the pool), from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 652-1840. Cowpoke Fall Gathering activities run Nov. 12 to 15 at the Blue Goose Fruit Shed. Tickets are on sale at Main Drug, Foothill Feed & Gift and Blue Goose Produce. Friday general seating tickets are $35 and $45 for reserved seating. Nov. 14 matinee tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for children 14 and under. At 10 a.m. Saturday there will be a free Open Mic session. A western barbecue will be served from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday; tickets are $12. On Nov. 12 there will be a Kickoff Reception at the High-Hand Conservatory; tickets are $30 each. Cowboy Church is at 10 a.m. Sunday; admission is free. The Penryn School Commemorative Brick Patio has spaces available to add names in honor or memory of family, friends, teachers and anyone special. GreenTree Dance Studio, located at 5007 Citrus Colony Road in Loomis, is now enrolling new and continuing students for classes starting in September. The Placer County Writers Group meets at 9 a.m. every Wednesday and the third Saturday of the month at the Flower Farm Coffee Shop, at the corner of Horseshoe Bar and Auburn-Folsom Roads. “It is our express purpose to write and collect stories that bring our attention to the wonder of life,” said coordinator Bob Golling.
