SACRAMENTO — The Bear River High girls golf team edged Whitney by nine strokes, 449-458, to win the first Pioneer Valley League tournament at Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course Monday afternoon. Lincoln took third with a team score of 500, followed by El Dorado and Placer, which both finished with totals of 516. Medallist Samantha Stockton fired an impressive 3-under 68 for the Wildcats on the 18-hole course, 10 strokes better than Ashlee Andrews’ 78, second overall and tops for the Bruins. Emilie Yonan shot an 83 for Bear River and Hannah Brown an 86, good for fourth and fifth place overall honors, respectively. Lucy Corippo shot a 93 for fifth place and Sierra Pruss rounded out Bear River’s top five with a 109. Taylor Evans shot a 95 to pace the Lady Hillmen, followed by Sydney Ryan (97), Sky Conners (105), Alyssa Jones (108) and Emily Mattson (111). Bear River hosts Placer Thursday at Lake of the Pines. BOYS SOCCER GARDEN VALLEY — Aaron Schindler scored two second-half goals, breaking a halftime tie and sending Colfax to a 4-2 come-from-behind nonleague win over Golden Sierra Monday afternoon. Schindler scored his first goal on a shot from 18 yards out in the 58th minute and his second five minutes later on an Eric MacKenstadt assist. The Grizzlies led 1-0 before Kyle Lutkemiller headed the ball in off a 40-yard free kick from Steven Smith in the 20th minute. Smith also crossed a ball to MacKenstadt in the box for a goal in the 26th minute. The Falcons (4-7-2 overall, 2-0 PVL) host Lincoln Wednesday afternoon. Colfax won the junior varsity game 4-0 behind a pair of goals from Mike Moore and one goal apiece from Ryan Sinclair and Timmy Smith. Vacaville Christian 1, Forest Lake Christian 0 at Lake of the Pines – The visiting Falcons beat Forest Lake (4-6-1 overall, 2-1) for the first time in school history in Central Valley Christian League action Monday afternoon. “We came out pretty sluggish and just didn’t play our top game,” said Thad Kopec, Forest Lake head coach. “The second half was much better intensity. The momentum was ours but we just couldn’t put any shots in.” Forest Lake travels to Fair Oaks to take on Sacramento Waldorf Thursday afternoon. El Dorado 1, Placer 0 at Placerville — The defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV champions used a goal in the 38th minute to hold off the Hillmen Monday. Placer (5-6-2, 0-3) had scored just one goal in three league games. “This was our best league game so far,” Hillmen head coach Mark Miller said. “We played much better defensively. Goalkeeper Nigel Pell had 11 saves for Placer, which entertains Whitney Wednesday. VOLLEYBALL GRASS VALLEY — The Del Oro volleyball team came up just short in its bid to win its 10th straight match Monday, falling to Nevada Union 21-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-22. The Golden Eagles led 6-0 in the fourth game but couldn’t close it out against the Miners (8-5 overall, 2-1 Sierra Foothill League), falling to 14-7 overall and 2-2 in the SFL with their first loss since Sept. 15 at Granite Bay. Aly Duffin had 11 kills and three blocks to lead Del Oro. Emily Mattevi had six kills and Kate Kessler finished with eight digs. Jess Lehner had 23 assists. Nevada Union won the JV match 25-15, 25-15 to drop the Eagles to 3-4 overall and 0-4 in league. The Miners beat Del Oro 25-12, 25-23 in the freshman game.
