Branum into semifinals after beating Thornton

Del Oro High junior Austin Branum stopped Placer senior Joe Thornton at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament Friday in Stockton. The two standouts from the foothills met in the quarterfinals at 140 pounds. Branaum moves on to Saturday's semifinals and earns an automatic berth to the CIF State Champoinships. Thornton will have to battle back through the consolation bracket to make state. Bear River senior Jory Gemignani picked up two victories to start the tournament at 112 pounds. He lost to Oakdale's Garrett Fortado in the quarterfinals. Gemignani will be back in action Saturday. At 152, Kevin Burrage was scheduled to wrestle in the semifinals Friday night. Colfax's Vinny Corralejo won his first-round match before falling in the second round. He is still alive in the consolation bracket. At 171 pounds, Placer's Steven Cox and Del Oro's Jake Uhler were both alive in the consolation bracket.
