Boys take two SFL losses on chin

-A +A
It was a tough week to say the least for the Del Oro boys basketball team. In a pair of tightly played Sierra Foothill League games, the Golden Eagles slipped to 1-2 in league action by taking a home loss to Woodcreek, 55-44, on Tuesday and then at Nevada Union, 65-62, on Jan. 20. Del Oro, now 14-6 overall on the season, tired to get back on track with a home tilt on Tuesday against Roseville. The Golden Eagles then host Granite Bay tonight in the Bonner Gym at 7 p.m. In the game at Nevada Union, Del Oro seemed early on they were going to put the host Miners away. Led by a balanced offense and good defensive play, Del Oro led 27-18 with just 2:20 to play in the first half. However, NU followed scoring antics by Chris Porter, Colin Lee and sophomore Ian Davis to finish the half in a flurry and close the gap to 29-26 at intermission. Del Oro followed heads up play from Jordan Broyles and Taylor Bergthold to maintain the lead for much of the third quarter. But Lee, who scored 15 of his game total 18 points in the second half, pushed the Miners into the lead early in the fourth stanza. Del Oro tried to mount a late comeback and actually cut NU’s margin to 60-58 on a three-point play by Broyles with 38 seconds to play but NU hit five of six free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. ~ Staff report
