Del Oro High boys basketball coach Geoff Broyles and his Golden Eagles knew they would have their hands full in the Feb. 23 CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II playoff opener on the road at Del Campo. And fate proved to be right on, despite Broyles’ hoopsters putting up a spirited fight, the Golden Eagles couldn’t take down the No. 4 seeded Cougars. “I thought we played a good game but they just made more points than we did,” said Broyles following Del Campo’s 71-58 win that ended Del Oro’s season at 18-9. “We aren’t moving on but I thought the kids had a great season.” The host Cougars used its full court zone press to help cause early turnovers and grab an early lead. However, behind strong play from post player Kyle Russell, the Eagles battled back to trail just 15-14 after a quarter and stayed within striking range at 33-27 at halftime. Del Oro then made a game of things as Russell, Alan Kidwell and Jordan Broyles picked up the offensive slack and guided the Golden Eagles through a good third period, which left the Eagles down five points, 42-37. But in an up-tempo final stanza, Del Campo outscored Del Oro 29-21 to pull away for a 13-point victory. ~ Staff report
