Boys, girls crosscountry head to state meet

(Courtesy Photo) Del Oro High will be well-represented at Saturday’s CIF State Cross County Meet in Fresno. The Golden Eagles will send both their boys and girls varsity teams after each squad qualified by placing high at last Saturday’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Section meet ran at Willow Hills, near Folsom. Del Oro’s boys varsity came up with a third-place team finish, led by Trevor Stephens, who placed second overall with a time of 16:14. Joining Stephens on the trip to Fresno will be Sam Baker (13th), Austin Dawson (32nd), Dustin Penn-Henry (36th), Dan Grattan (37th), Spencer Stacy (40th) and Kyle Woo (46th). The Lady Eagles varsity squad ran to a second-place finish in Div. III led by Megan Gentes, who was 7th in 19:58, and teammate Alexa Lua, who finished 12th in 20:20. Also aiding the Del Oro cause were Maddy Montgomery (15th), Ashley Dessert (19th) and Dominique Tristant (20th). Del Oro’s JV boys team grabbed a first-place in Div. III with Alex Makebri and Joe Ganoung leading the way with strong second and fourth place finishes, respectively. Also helping the Del Oro surge were Alex Ratkowski (6th), Drew Fajardo (18th), Nolan Hopping (19th), Brad Whaler (25th) and Austin Smith (26th). Del Oro’s sophomore boys placed fourth, with Race Nelson finishing in 11th place overall, in a time of 11:46. Other top Del Oro finishers included Karl Colina in 14th and Alex Bice in 18th places. Del Oro’s other first-place team finish Saturday came in the girls frosh-soph division as Aleena Gingerich led the way with a second-place effort in a time of 14:00. Also helping carry the winning Del Oro load were Raquel Murphy (4th), Deja Estrada (8th), Jaclyn Leduc(10th) and Claire Campbell (13th).
