Boys basketball hosts invitation tourney this weekend

Del Oro hosts boys invitational hoop tourney this weekend While football and a possible state bowl berth is the buzz this week at Del Oro High School, don’t forget this weekend the boys basketball program is hosting its annual Del Oro Invitational Tournament. A total of eight varsity and eight JV teams will compete in two separate tournaments that run Thursday through Saturday. Del Oro’s varsity boys hoops team, which opened its regular season last week with a 63-57 home win over Laguna Creek, will open tournament play today at 6:30 p.m., against Paradise. In other first-round games, Oakmont plays Mira Loma at 3:30 p.m., Lincoln and Bella Vista meet at 5 p.m., and in the nightcap at 8 p.m., Capital Christian takes on Whitney. On Friday, consolation bracket games will be played at 4 and 5:30 p.m., before the winner’s bracket semi-finals at 7 and 8:30 p.m. Del Oro is bracketed with Oakmont and Mira Loma. Saturday’s final round games have the 7th place contest at 10:30 a.m., the consolation game at 3 p.m. and the third place game at 4:30 p.m. The varsity championship is set for 6 p.m. In the JV portion of the tournament, Del Oro’s JVs will meet Colfax at 5 p.m. In other first-round games, Oakmont and Whitney collide at 3:30 p.m., Paradise meets Bella Vista at 6:30 p.m., and in the 8 p.m. game, Lincoln plays Mira Loma. JV action will continue on Friday with second round games in the Yokote Gym. Saturday’s trophy games will have the 7th place game at10:30 a.m., and consolation game at noon, in the Yokote Gym before the third-place noon game and 1:30 p.m. championship game played in the Bonner Gym. In Del Oro’s opening win over Laguna Creek, Del Oro trailed 23-15 at quarter’s end, and 34-29 at halftime before the Golden Eagles made their move in the second half. Led by Jordan Broyles, Alan Kidwell and Taylor Bergthold, Del Oro out-pointed the visitors 13-9 in the third quarter to close the gap to 43-42 before opening the gap in the fourth stanza for the victory. Broyles led the offense for Del Oro with 19 points, while Kidwell added 15, and Bergthold sank 12 more. The scoring was completed by Taylor Butterfield, with six points, Nick Lewis and Rex Hime, with four points each, and Kyle Setterlund with three. Del Oro will resume non-league action on Tuesday, Dec. 13, with a tripleheader at Vista del Lago in Folsom.
