Save for a second quarter run when Berkeley’s Yellow Jackets got their running and pressing game off and running, the Del Oro Lady Eagles acquitted themselves fairly well in the marquee game of Monday’s Common Good Classic at Antelope High School. Del Oro, the top-ranked team in the Sacramento area, fell to the state and bay area power, 63-46. Coming into the contest Berkeley held a No. 10 state ranking while Del Oro was No. 17. The Lady Eagles led 11-8 after a quarter but the visitors ran off a big 28-11 second quarter blitz that the Lady Eagles couldn’t recover from. In the second half, sparked by the shooting of Madeline Campbell and Brianna Ruiz, the Loomis squad kept contact with the Yellowjackets. Campbell finished the contest with 19 points while Ruiz netted 10. Del Oro, now 12-3 overall on the season, will host Roseville Friday night and Lincoln of Stockton on Saturday with a 5 p.m. varsity tip-off time. In last week’s Sierra Foothill League opener, Campbell poured in a season high 27 points and the Lady Eagles had no trouble with Rocklin’s press in a a 70-30 victory. The win, Del Oro’s 51st straight in league play dating back to the 2005 season, was highlighted by Campbell’s outburst as she nailed five 3-pointers. Belle Obert scored 11 and blocked seven shots while Brianna Ruiz scored nine points and added six rebounds. Becky Duncan also passed out eight assists for the Lady Eagles. ~ Staff report
