Bear River girls earn tourney win; Placer girls suffer first loss and finish in 3rd placeBy: Journal sports staff
The Bear River High Schools girls basketball team took home first place at the Marysville Tournament, beating the hosts 76-20 Saturday.
Teryn Rath scored 17 points, Kaitlyn Reina added 16, and the Bruins cruised to a big victory. Jennifer Alberts (14 points), Cindy Solomon (10) and Sarah Hagar (10) also reached double digits.
Bear River’s Savannah Welz was named MVP and Reina was named to the all-tournament team.
Placer 52, Shasta 42 — Maddie Graham and Baylee Vanderdoes each had 15 for Placer, whichled by five at half before pulling away in the third-place game at the Harlan Carter Tournament. The Lady Hillmen (7-1) suffered their first loss of the season in double overtime Friday night against Pleasant Valley, 58-56. “Obviously we would have liked to win the tournament,” coach Tony Camillucci said. “Last night was a heartbreaker after a double-overtime loss. We were exhausted today, it was a gut-check for us.” In the loss, Placer had a good outing from Ariana Jensen, who scored 15 points on five 3-pointers and Kirstin Schauble, who added nine points. Kerry McCullough and Graham were named to the all-tournament team. Placer plays at Vista del Lago Tuesday night.
Forest Lake Christian 65, Marysville 53 — Tournament MVP Chase Augustino scored 16 points, but Roman Makovey had a team-high 17 points in Saturday’s championship round victory. Brandon Camacho, who scored 14 points Saturday, was selected to the all-tournament team representing the Falcons (6-0).
Del Oro placed fourth at the Elk Grove Tournament Saturday, behind Elk Grove, James Logan and De La Salle, respectively. Individual placers for the Golden Eagles included Isaac Blackburn (106 pounds, 2nd) Clay Shropshire (113, 3rd) Jansen Engelbrecht (120, 5th), Ian Gassaway (126, 7th), Tanner Robison (132, 3rd), Brandon Jeppson (170, 6th), Dylan Kainrath (180, 2nd), Saul Menese (heavyweight, 4th).
