Several of the top high school football teams in the state will battle in this weekend’s Allegiant Battle For Veterans at Del Oro High School. This is the second year that the Battle For Veterans – which will have games on Friday and Saturday – has been hosted at the school. A second showcase will be a tribute to US military veterans and will be hosted next weekend, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Westlake High, in Westlake Village. While football is one of the main attractions for the Allegiant Battle for Veterans Showcase set for Aug. 24 and 25, the opening ceremonies for the event will actually kickoff on Thursday, Aug. 23. Thursday’s kickoff dinner, featuring guest speakers, will be held at Adventure Christian Church, in Roseville. The church is located at 6401 Stanford Ranch Road, in Roseville. Speakers at the dinner include Stu Weber and Kevin Bracy, along with several wounded veterans. The opening ceremonies will set the tone for the next two weeks of cause-related football events at Del Oro and Westlake. The feature game at Del Oro, on Friday at 7:30 p.m., will feature the host Golden Eagles – No. 8 ranked team in the state pre-season rankings by Cal Hi Sports – against the No. 4 state-rated Oaks Christian, of Westlake Village. “We’re expecting a very, very tough game,” said Del Oro coach Casey Taylor about his 2012 edition of the Golden Eagles opening against the Southern California power. “They have some quality, Div. I athletes that are explosive every time they touch the ball.” Saturday’s feature game, at 7:30 p.m., pairs Granite Bay and Westlake. Last season at the Battle showcase, Westlake defeated Del Oro, 28-25, in a thrilling overtime game. Next week at Westlake, Del Oro and Granite Bay will switch opponents as the Golden Eagles will play the host Warriors and Granite Bay will travel with Del Oro and play Oaks Christian. Military flyovers and parachute drops are scheduled prior to both the Del Oro-Oaks Christian game on Friday and the Granite Bay-Westlake game on Saturday. In addition to the high school games, several youth games and a “Battle of the Badges” game between Placer and Nevada County sheriff’s offices are also scheduled. Ticket prices for each day are $10 for adults, $6 for students and $3 for children 12 and under.
