Saying that Sam Baker and Brie Simmons were ?athletes for all seasons? at Del Oro High this past school year could be the understatement of the Golden Eagles? 2011-12 athletic accomplishments. Baker and Simmons, a duo that were the school?s do-it-all athletes, were honored last week by being selected as Del Oro?s respective Boy and Girl Senior Athletes of the Year. Del Oro track coach Dustin Fee presented Baker and noted that many times during Del Oro?s run to the Sierra Foothill League and CIF Sac-Joaquin Section championships Baker ?put his own personal gains aside to help the team score points.? In fall, Baker doubled on the school?s water polo team, where he was a team captain and earned all-Sierra Foothill League honors, and on the cross country team where he again was an all-SFL competitor. This spring, Baker was a standout on Del Oro?s SFL and CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Div. II championship track squad competed on the school swim team. In aiding the Golden Eagles, Baker clocked the fourth fastest 800 meter time (1:56.91) in school history. At the SFL championships, Baker also turned in a 3200 meter time of 9:45.27, which enabled the Golden Eagles to outdistance Rocklin for the SFL crown. He was also a two-time all-SFL track selection. Simmons will leave Del Oro as one of the most decorated track athletes in the school?s history. Del Oro coach Jake Hardey presented Simmons and called her traits ?strong, thoughtful, competitive and thankful.? This past track season Simmons qualified for the CIF State Track meet in four events. She graduates with Del Oro records in the 100 meters hurdles, the 100 meters, the 200 meters, the 300 meter hurdles and the long jump. Simmons also became the first Del Oro girl athlete to qualify at the state meet in two relay teams, the 4x100 in her junior season and the 4x400 in her senior year. Simmons will continue her education and track career at Brigham Young University next year. In addition to Baker and Simmons, the following Del Oro athletes were honored by the SFL for reaching student-athlete grade point level and athletic excellence this past year.
