Roseville Police are investigating Sunday’s shooting of a suspected burglar/shoplifter by an off-duty Placer County Sheriff’s deputy. Around 4:30 p.m., Sergey Pautov, 22 of Rancho Cordova, allegedly stole an undisclosed number of lottery tickets from an AM/PM store on Fairway Drive, reported Rocklin Police spokesman Lt. Jamie Knox. The store clerk told police the suspect fled in a silver-colored Honda Civic. A Rocklin Police officer patrolling the area spotted a vehicle matching the description given by the store clerk and attempted to stop it, but the driver fled down Sunset Boulevard and on to East Roseville Parkway. When the pursuit entered the Roseville city limits, Roseville Police joined in the chase. Officers lost sight of the suspect near the entrance to the hospital, however. Several citizens flagged officers down to report they had seen the vehicle drive into the Sutter Roseville Medical Center parking lot, Lt. Knox continued. Officers then received reports the suspect was jumping over backyard fences in the Stone Canyon Drive area. At 4:55 p.m., Roseville Police responded to reports of shots fired in the 1700 block of Poppy Fields Drive. According to Roseville Police Public Information Officer Dee Dee Gunther, an off-duty Placer County Sheriff’s deputy, who had apparently been monitoring the call, had located and shot the suspect. Pautov was transported to Sutter Roseville Medical Center, where he is currently listed in fair condition. The suspect is facing charges of felony burglary, reckless evading and possession of a stolen vehicle. According to standard countywide protocol for an officer-involved shooting, Gunther explained, the Placer County District Attorney’s Office will monitor the investigation. When completed, the case will be submitted to the Placer County District Attorney’s office for their review. ~ Staff report
