LOOMIS– Last week, it was boys water polo teams taking center stage. This week, it’s the girls.
Sixty-four girls high school water polo teams from around Northern California will converge on the South Placer area this Friday and Saturday for the two-day, 24th annual Sierra Shootout/Chuck McCollum Invitational Tournament.
Pools that will be used include facilities at Del Oro, Sierra College, Rocklin High and Whitney High.
Matches will begin Friday morning and continue all day through Saturday afternoon’s championship trophy matches.
Del Oro, coached by Megan Hertel and Stephanie Fee, will compete in the 16-team Gold Bracket. Also entered in the division are Whitney, Nevada Union, Tokay, McClatchy, Sonora, Castro Valley, College Park, Bear Creek, Kimball of Tracy, Dixon, Christian Brothers, Bella Vista, Oakmont, Concord and Buhach Colony.
Del Oro will be coming into the tournament off a 16-6 non-league verdict last week over Roseville. Leading the scoring for the Lady Eagles were Emily Gammelgard and Marena Feickert with three goals each.
Also finding the net were Mikayla Manley and Grace Bell with two scores apiece and Mia Moore, Peyton Hess, Mary Lubiens and Khloe Fillmore, all with one apiece.
In last weekend’s boys tournament, the Golden Eagle boys went 2-3 with wins over Atwater, 12-6, and Nevada Union, 7-5. Del Oro fell to Tamalpais of Mill Valley, 11-3, and Christian Brothers twice, 15-3 and 10-2.
Playing well for Del Oro were seniors Brady Shaw and Jackson Stanwick. Also doing a good job were sophomores Landon McIntire and Jack Whitaker.
