Of the 80 teams competing May 12 in the 24-hour Go the Distance relay race, Coach Tony (the Tiger) LaPlante’s Team Frosted Flakes placed first.

On May 24, the Frosted Flakes from Loomis Basin Charter School were recognized in a winner’s ceremony held at Franklin Elementary School in Loomis. The team ran six-minute miles at 10 miles per hour and averaged one and a half minute laps, according to LaPlante. Their ending distance was 244 miles, LaPlante said.

“The kids were sprinting for 24 hours, basically,” the coach said.

The relay race was an “incredible” experience for the students. It taught them perseverance, grit and overcoming a challenge,” LaPlante said.

“The kids said they loved the team’s comradery and meeting a different challenge,” LaPlante said.

Second-place winners from the middle school division were the Power Rangers from H. Clark Powers Elementary School, who came in at 213 miles in 24 hours.

Del Oro High School’s Holy Fit team came in third with 209 miles in 24 hours.

The race was held at the Del Oro High School track and included team members of adults, teachers and students, according to LaPlante.

The Frosted Flakes team members are Wyatt Roseman, Jared Gode, Grace Rudolph, Kaylee Mei Chao, Clay Clark, Garret LaPlante, Carson Bingham, Thomas Clark, Tyler Crandell, Tony LaPlante, Ella Jimemez, Ellie Hardey, Laine Atwell, Logan Foster, Jordan Davis, James Ramesbottom, David Harrison, Megan Gul, Ryan Sauve, Jena Howard and Ava Urquhart.

Go the Distance was presented by the Loomis Basin Education Foundation in coordination with Del Oro High School and the Women's Athletic Club.

Jane Runte, a junior at Del Oro High School, helped organize the Go the Distance relay race.

"Go The Distance is a great way to be a part of the Loomis Community as well as support our local schools,” Runte said.
