Celebrating 40 years this Saturday, Del Oro High School Band will proudly lead a parade of 20 competing marching bands in Loomis.
On Oct. 20, 1979, Del Oro High School Band hosted the first band review in Loomis and called it Band Spectacular.
Cathy Dokimos Longworth, who was a Del Oro drum major and now lives in Washington, remembers the event.
“It was so exciting to have the first Spectacular Competition,” Dokimos Longworth said. “It was a dream come true for all of us.”
This year, 46 Northern California school bands with a total of more than 3,500 students will participate in Saturday’s parade and Field Show. It is the largest annual event that Del Oro High School presents.
For this year’s 40th Band Spectacular’s parade, bands will depart at 9 a.m. Saturday from Del Oro High school and proceed along Taylor Road.
Field Show Competition in the Del Oro Stadium will begin at 1:25 p.m. and continue through Saturday night. Field Show entrance is $10 general and $7 for seniors and children.
Awards will be given for music, marching, showmanship, percussion, visual effects and Sweepstakes. At 9:20 p.m. Saturday, the Del Oro High School band will perform its popular light show for the audience’s enjoyment.
“This is a record year for the number of bands in competition in a Northern California Field Event,”said Antony Rozic, this year’s Del Oro drum major. Del Oro Band expects an all-ages crowd of 5,000 to attend this event.
